open letter to delivery guy
dear mr dhl guy,
i appreciate the speed at which you can make your deliveries, truly i do. but maybe next time you should check the boxes you're delivering to make sure they don't get completely mangled on the way to their destination.
i ordered a new monitor for my desktop and it arrived thursday in this box (the pic is blurry cuz i have no balance):

niiiiiiiiiice. and the styrofoam that was supposed to protect the monitor looked like this:

so when i took the monitor out of the box the screen looked like this:

and now i have to go to the trouble of returning my monitor and wait for a replacement. you do know that i do not like to wait, don't you? i'm so not happy about the whole situation. so when they deliver my new monitor, please make sure there are no heavy objects that might maim the poor thing!
thanks,
musikchyck
UPDATE: my wonderful and really cool girlfriend got on the phone today and spoke to some people in india so i didn't have to lay the smackdown. and now i'm getting a brand new monitor shipped to me (it'll probably take til the end of next week) and return labels so i can send the busted one back. YAY! i love the girlfriend!

those boys in blue
it came down to the ineffective arm of the catcher in tonight's dodgers game. they lost because this guy stole 5 bases and phillips couldn't get the ball to the bag in any sort of time for it even to be a close call. the nail on the coffin was the guy (i apologize for not knowing his name but i'm on my ipaq and i can't open multple windows. it's also very hard to type in semi darkness on this teeny keyboard.) stealing second on a pitchout and then stealing third on the next pitch.
the good news is that the dodgers gall further behind the padres. the bad news is that the giants are even futher back--they lost to the cubs today.
sigh...and people wonder why i don't bet on sports. i'm just too damned emotional about them to be objective...
UPDATE: the guy's name is Ryan Freel. he's the second baseman. from mlb.com:
Then it became Freel's turn to literally steal the show. He drew a one-out walk in the ninth off Yhency Brazoban, easily stole second and third and scored the go-ahead run on Lopez's sacrifice fly to deep center. David Weathers closed it out in the ninth for his sixth save.

yeah, cuz i have time for this
i'm sitting in the waitng area for pepboys. the battery in my car died. i've been driving the girlfrend's car for the past week, i took it to get detailed and it was then cleaner than mine, so i've been driving it ever since. but we have street cleaning on monday and tuesday so i had to move it for tomorrow. only it didn't start. so this is the second time in as many weeks that i've had to call my friends at AAA. last week the guy told me i needed a new battery. so when he came back today (wouldn't you know it'd be the same guy?) he was like, "didn't i tell you to get a new one?" but who has time to do stuff like that? well, now i do
so here i sit, blogging, listening to the tv above my head. incidentally, did you know the #1 restaurant for dogs and their owners is the backdoor bakery in silverlake? the farm in beverly hills is #2. i heard that on channel 9's 9 on the town. it was actually their top 9 story, the top 9 pet friendly restaurants.
and if anyone's wondering, the giants are leading the cubs 2 to 1...
when is my car going to be done, anyway? i'm getting hungry. and i've already bought new wiper blades for my car and the girlfriend's car. and a couple of other things, too. wiper blades in july, you ask? yep. we're expecting thunder storms this week as it just gets hotter, more humid and more godawful.

my new project
i've decided that the cds in the garage are taking up too much room. last year, i spent two weeks converting my collection to mp3 and then put the cds in boxes. since then i've accumulated more cds and yesterday i started catching up with my ripping and made the decision to start selling the cds i don't want online.
the girlfriend suggested i check all the files i have so far for blips or other blemishes in quality, but as there are over 8,000 files, that might take til christmas. so i'm taking the chance that they're all 'good' versions, and i'm looking forward to getting rid of stacks and stacks of cds.
most of what i'm getting rid of are things that i bought back in the days before you could go to itunes and get the one or two songs off an album that you wanted. i've never been one to read liner notes after i've read them once, so i don't think i'm missing out on anything there, either.
right now what's driving me crazy are the piles of cds yet to be ripped on my desk. and the ones that aren't in their cases. i can't figure out where those could be...

wicked, take 2
took a friend to see wicked last night. it was a little different than last week, when i went with the girlfriend. it started out similarly, we had dinner at hollywood and vine, then walked over to the pantages. she bought a couple of shirts for herself and one of her daughters and we went to find our seats, which were house right instead of house left, like last week.
the show started off well enough, but 3 minutes into it, someone off stage left yelled, "stop!" to which glinda replied, "i'm sorry, did you just say stop?" when this was confirmed, she said, "alright then, we're stopping, be back in a bit." or something like that, and the cast left the stage and the curtain went down.
the house lights didn't go back on, and a buzz started in the crowd, who by now realized this wasn't part of the show. a minute later an announcement was made over the speakers, saying they had minor technical difficulties and would return asap. my theory is that the bubble thing that glinda arrives on wouldn't go back up.
a few minutes later the curtain went back up and it was back to the show.
i didn't notice when walking in earlier which of the regular cast was not performing but i guess i should have, because the woman who normally plays elphaba wasn't there last night, much to my disappointment. the woman who did play her is usually in the ensemble, i think. there are two understudies for elphaba, maria eberline and jenna leigh green. jenna leigh green played nessarose last night, so i'll assume it was maria eberline playing elphaba. in any case, her voice was nowhere near as good as stephanie j block's, and her presence wasn't as good, either. whereas i was in tears at the end of the show last week, i barely registered the ending last night. everyone still got raucous applause, however. and i suppose had i not heard ms. block do elphaba i might have liked this girl's performance better, but i don't think so. i just get the feeling that she's not very well trained, and that she's hurting herself, trying to hit and sustain notes that she really couldn't reach. i'd complain more, but let's just leave it at i wasn't very satisfied with her performance.
on the other hand, i really did enjoy glinda last night. she was very "on" and had more notes than last week. so that, at least, made me happy.

ever wonder why it's called drainbamaged?
it's because i do stupid stuff like listen to my doctor. the one who said no fan and no a/c when i'm sleeping. when the southwest is experiencing the warmest weather of the year so far. and it's humid enough that we're getting lightning storms. what is this, fucking florida?
anyway, i slept last night with no fan and no a/c, with the humidifier on. i had two icepacks on my body, hoping for some relief. who was i trying to fool?
the girlfriend left and went to sleep in the den, taking the unused fan with her. smart girl, the girlfriend is.
i must've sweat out about a gallon of water because i was so dehydrayed this morning i felt as if i was hungover.
so much for following doctor's orders. tonight it's fan on full blast, i tell you!

i don't know what possessed me
to schedule a dr. appointment at 8:30 in the morning. like i'm anywhere near a mood that would suit someone poking and prodding me.
i'm going to see an ear nose and throat guy because apparently my vocal chords are swollen and have been for quite some time. yay. so i'm having them scoped, which entails something involving a small camera inserted down my throat. did i mention my gag reflex is very short? this should be interesting. let's all cross our fingers that the prognosis is just swelling, ok? no nodules on the chords, no permanent damage. cuz that would just suck.
UPDATE: so the prognosis is positive: i have some swelling due, he thinks, to post nasal drip and allergies, which should be cleared up with consistent use of nasonex, no fans or a/c in the room at night, and using a humidifier when i sleep. so now it's two weeks of being quiet (or less rambunctious--i don't tend to get quieter) and using the stuff he recommended, and we go from there.

it's killing me. where are my allergy meds and inhaler?

we're at the sparks game. for some reason, tamecka dixon and chamique holdssclaw aren't playing. and spongebob squarepants is here. have i entered some sort of alternate universe?
UPDATE: tamecka dixon apparently has water on her knee and chamique has a sore hamstring and is day to day. but stupid spongebob was there for the whole game.

UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
so if you get the chance, you've got to see wicked. no ifs ands or buts about it.
i wasn't all that impressed with the voice of glinda, but stephanie j. block, who played elphaba, ROCKED!!!!!!!
i'm so wound up right now i don't think i'll be able to sleep for a while. of course, the bailey's and coffee could just do the trick and make me pass out.
good thing i get to see it again next week. it was too good to just see once!
oh, and daniel, it's coming to san diego next year, or you could go home for a visit and see it san francisco...

11 more to go...

katie smith of the minnesota lynx needs just 11 points to become the 1st woman in professional basketball to score 5,000. she could do it tomorrow night against detroit. good luck to her, but then again, she doesn't really need it--she averages over 16 ppg.
here's part of the article on msnbc:
"It's a tremendous accomplishment,'' said Lynx coach Suzie McConnell Serio. "To be able to score that many points, and she's been through two knee injuries. She's been able to maintain that level of play.''So why is it this woman can walk down the street without being hounded by screaming little girls in No. 30 Lynx jerseys?
"I think her being in the ABL first, she's not one of those Rebecca Lobos, Lisa Leslies, Sheryl Swoopes, the three starters of the (WNBA),'' Bird said. "She's a blue-collar player. She drops 25 points on you and you don't even realize it, but trust me, I know. I'm glad I don't have to guard her.''
Even when Smith is brilliant - she led the West with 16 points on 4-of-6 shooting from 3-point range in last weekend's All-Star victory - it still isn't enough.
the rest of the article is here. she's an amazing player, with the pure shooter's touch and one of the quickest releases of anyone i've seen. incredible.
UPDATE: she did it!

allergies abound
my eyes are so fucking itchy right now. i went outside which, apparently, is a bad idea. luckily i have these drops that have antihistamine in them so my eyes don't swell shut. now isn't that a pretty picture--moon face with no eyes. i'd look like the stay puff marshmallow man.

i want that!
have you seen this show? it's a showcase of new technologies and products for the home, most of which hold little or no interest for me.
except for this:

it's a slingbox.
The Slingbox is a compact and elegantly designed, state-of-the-art electronic device that connects to the back of your TV. It redirects, or “placeshifts,” the TV signal from your cable box, satellite receiver, or digital video recorder (DVR) to your computer or laptop of choice, no matter your location — so long as you have a high-speed Internet connection.
think it'll work on my ipaq? nah. prolly not.

the boys rock!
the girlfrend and i went to see the gay men's chorus of los angeles last night. their inalconcert of the season was a salute to kander and ebb. it was fabulous! the music, the costumes, the choreography--all were top notch!

no more baseball?
or softball at the olympics. well, at least at the 2012 games. they took a vote today and they're out.
i'd link the usa today article here but my ipaq doesn't do pop ups.
it mainly speaks to thee european dominance of the IOC, or so says the article. i for one think they lose out by not having these in the games...

babysitting
well, what do you call it when you're sposed to keep an eye on a 17 year old? it's probably offensive to call it babysitting, at least to my cousin (the 17 year old).
but because he has an 11:30 curfew, we kind of do, too. i suppose we could call in, but it's probably better to actually be present at the house to make sure he's home.

out of the loop
i've been out of circulation for a while i guess. while i've been not reading the news a lot has been happening. who knew the world still went on without me?
the g8 summit starts tomorrow. think they'll cancel africa's debt?
sandra day o'connor resigned. women's uteruses will once again become the subject of debate for old white men and right wing busybodies alike.
luther vandross passed away on friday. i need a day of mourning.
