babies babies babies

in the past two days i have had the great fortune of spending time with great friends and two children completely unrelated to me under the age of 2. babies are interesting creatures, very cute and totally foreign to me. although i come from a relatively large family, i didn't spend a whole lot of time with infants or toddlers when i was younger, and now that my friends are starting to have children, i'm a little bit intimidated.

but i usually just make faces at them til they either laugh or cry and then walk away, convinced that i've done as much maternal stuff as is required to make me look like a person with feelings.

honestly, i have more interest in playing with the family pets. it's not that i don't like children. i just don't know what to do with them.

does this make me a horrible person?

no, it makes you smart.

i too avoided interacting with babies as much as possible until required. they are just too complicated. i mean look at their problems, unusual fragility, bizarre hollering, communication obstacles and random stinkiness.

(ok, i made faces at them, but with a face like mine, even a baby would laugh.)
